2015

  • June: Governor Ducey leads his first trade mission to Mexico City.

  • July: Claudia Pavlovich is elected governor of Sonora

  • September: Governor Ducey and an Arizona delegation attend Pavlovich’s inauguration

  • MOU is signed between the University of Arizona President Hart (2012-2017) and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México for the establishment of the Centro de Estudios Mexicanos (CEM) in Arizona

2016

  • June: first summit is held between Governor Ducey and Governor Pavlovich

  • Arizona and Sonora agree to create the Arizona-Sonora Mega-Region Energy Roadmap.

  • Director Halikowski and Undersecretary of Transportation in Mexico sign an MOU establishing a study to be conducted jointly between ADOT and SCT to look at the Arizona-Mexico corridor, looking at both infrastructure and industrial/commercial clusters for investment opportunities. This is a first-of-its-kind study that is partially funded by ADOT, SCT, and the State of Sonora.

  • Governor Ducey asks ADOT to conduct a sigma-style analysis of operations at the ports of entry; it leads to the creation of the Border Liaison Unit.

  • December: Unified Cargo Processing launches southbound at Arizona international ports of entry. The Governor attended the ceremony along with US Ambassador to Mexico Roberta Jacobson.

  • Arizona and Sonora develop Environmental Strategic Plan.

  • Memorandum of Understanding is signed between the Arizona Commerce Authority and the Secretaría de Economía de Sonora to jointly promote the global attractiveness and competitiveness of the Arizona-Sonora region.

  • Declaration of Cooperation is signed between the Arizona Department of Real Estate, National Law Center of Arizona and the Instituto Catastral y Registral de Sonora to coordinate the exchange of information and knowledge on the real estate registration process in the region.

  • Declaration of Cooperation is signed between the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Secretaría de de Salud Pública de Sonora to provide training to health officials in Arizona and Sonora.

  • Declaration of Cooperation is signed between the Arizona Department of Transportation and the Secretaría de Infraestructura y Desarrollo Urbano de Sonora to share information on the infrastructure plans and projects at the border in Arizona and Sonora.

2017

  • January: Governor Ducey leads AZ delegation trip to Mexico City

  • Arizona and Sonora collaborate on the creation of the “Home Port” project in Puerto Penasco, Sonora.

  • The Lukeville - Puerto Penasco Safety Corridor Memorandum of Understanding is signed by Governor Ducey and Sonora Governor Pavlovich.

  • Groundbreaking of the pedestrian annex at the San Luis I port of entry (KAWC)

  • November: Governor Ducey hosts Mexico’s Ambassador to the U.S. Geronimo Gutierrez.

  • North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) modernization negotiations begin with all North American partners present.

  • MOU is signed between the Arizona Commerce Authority and the Secretaría de Economía de Sonora to improve the overall attractiveness and competitiveness of the Arizona-Sonora region.

  • Declaration of Cooperation signed between Northern Arizona University and the Universidad Tecnológica de Hermosillo to undertake joint academic, scientific, and cultural activities in areas of common interest and foster the education, promotion, and development of tourist activities in Arizona and Sonora.

  • Joint Statement of Cooperation is signed between the State of Arizona and the State of Sonora to promote education within various social, economic, and academic sectors.

2018

  • January: Governor Pavlovich attends Governor Ducey’s 2018 State of the State address

  • The Lukeville - Puerto Penasco Safety Corridor is officially opened.

  • Governor Ducey announces launch of SkyBridge Arizona at the Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport.

  • May: Governor Ducey and Governor Pavlovich host North American Summit (NGA, CONAGO and COF) in Phoenix, AZ

  • December: Governor Ducey attends the inauguration of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in Mexico City.

    • Governor Ducey was US Ambassador to Mexico Martha Barcena and Undersecretary for North American Affairs Jesus Seade’s first official meeting with a foreign dignitary.

  • December: Governor Ducey, Sonora Governor Pavlovich and New Mexico Governor Martinez sign a monumental MOU regarding the production, transfer and international distribution of natural gas.

  • Declaration of Cooperation signed between the Arizona Department of Transportation and the Secretaría de Infraestructura y Desarrollo Urbano de Sonora for the establishment of a Safety Commercial Logistical Program

  • MOU signed between the Arizona Office of Tourism and the Comisión Estatal del Fomento al Turismo de Sonora for the joint promotion of the Arizona-Sonora region as a “two-nation destination”

  • MOU signed between the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Secretaría de Salud Pública de Sonora to improve the protocol for emergency transfer of patients across the U.S.-Mexico border ports of entry

  • Declaration of Cooperation between the Arizona Commerce Authority and the Secretaría de Economía de Sonora to foster an innovation network supporting entrepreneurs and technology generators

  • Declaration of Collaboration signed between the Arizona Technology Council Foundation and the Secretaría de Educación y Cultura de Sonora for the joint promotion of the Chief Science Officers youth program focused on science, technology, engineering, and math

2019

60th anniversary of the Arizona-Mexico Commission 

  • January: Governor Pavlovich attends Governor Ducey’s second inauguration.

  • Governor’s budget includes funding for the cold rooms project at the Mariposa port of entry in Nogales.

  • The Arizona-Mexico Commission partners with Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Arizona Chamber Foundation to publish “The USMCA & Its Impact on Arizona.”

  • March: Governor Ducey hosts Ambassador Martha Barcena for her first official visit to Arizona as the Mexican Ambassador to the United States.

  • March: Governor Ducey hosts Chihuahua Governor Javier Corral in Arizona for his first official visit to Arizona.

  • Douglas Port of Entry Feasibility Study is completed by the General Services Administration (GSA) and a 2-port solution is recommended.

  • Governor Ducey and Pavlovich sign joint letter urging ratification of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The letters come the week before the 60th anniversary summit of the Arizona-Mexico Commission.

  • Governor Ducey launched USMCANow.org — a collaborative effort to advocate for the passage of the USMCA

  • August: USMCA Teletownhall with Rep. Greg Stanton

  • September: US Chamber of 100 USMCA fireside chat with Ambassador Lighthizer and Suzanne Clark of the US Chamber

  • December: Governor Ducey and Pavlovich break ground on Lucid vehicle manufacturing facility in Casa Grande

  • U.S. Congress approve and President Trump signs a spending bill including $152.4 million for the modernization of San Luis I Port of Entry – the only border port to receive funding.

  • December: President Trump signs the USMCA into law, approved unanimously by the Arizona congressional delegation.

  • Arizona-Sonora binational coordination through the Health committees on the sharing of information on COVID-19.

  • State of Arizona Office in Sonora is continued for eight more years.

  • December: AMC Board of Directors host dinner for Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo.

  • August: Arizona sends a delegation to Hermosillo, Sonora including participation from AMC Real Estate, Tourism, Transportation, Infrastructure & Ports, Economic Development Committees.

  • Declaration of Cooperation signed between the Arizona Department of Transportation and Secretariat of Infrastructure and Urban Development for the State of Sonora for the Arizona-Sonora Border Infrastructure Master Plan, which will serve as a guide to form the regional plan of Sonora and Arizona for the promotion of trade, tourism, and commerce.
